MUMBAI: Alfa, the new autorickshaw of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), is great news for customers seeking more leg room and safety but bad for market leader Bajaj, which is steadily losing market share.

M&M launched its passenger three-wheeler Alfa about five months ago in an effort to take a slice of the fast growing Rs 3,500 crore market...

Rajesh Jejurikar of Mahindra & Mahindra said: "We are growing by at least 20% since we started five months ago, and we are now operating in all states except Maharshtra and Gujarat where we will start in December."

M&M's efforts to build their portfolio will hinge on the efficiency of diesel offerings and larger designs. M&M officals say they've been able to ramp up speedily thanks to the network of distribution they already have...

Analysts indicate that thanks to the low costs of such vehicles, sales within the three-wheeler segment at 30% is a bright spot in the auto sector... but long-term success will depend on how laws are enforced by authorities on disbanding old  and polluting vehicles.
