NEW DELHI: Mayawati's basic identity may be that of a Dalit leader but she has now positioned herself as a mass leader of all communities. And her stated ambition is to become the Prime Minister.
As the leader of Bahujan Samaj Party, she is keen to play a national role...
Bhaujan Samaj Party was founded by Kanshi Ram in 1984. After his passing away in 2006, Mayawati has led BSP to success in other states. BSP has 17 MPs in Lok Sabha and six MPs in Rajya Sabha.
The party's income has trebled in the last five years:
2002-03: Rs 11.5 crore
2003-04: Rs 39.3 crore
2004-05: Rs 43.6 crore
2005-06: Rs 36.5 crore
2006-07: Rs 37 crore
She is also one of the highest tax-paying political leaders of the country. She paid Rs 26 crore as tax in 2006-07. Extrapolating this, her annual income appears to be in the range of Rs 78 crore. This is about double of the entire party's annual income.
BSP's assets have increased about four times in five years:
2002-03: Rs 10.9 crore
2003-04: Rs 39 crore
2004-05: Rs 43.6 crore
2005-06: Rs 43.09 crore
2006-07: Rs 44 crore
Mayawati's personal assets, according to the documents filed with Election Commission in 2004, were only Rs 1.36 crore. Much less than that of the party....
Now, a look at BSP's expenditure pattern (2005-06):
Organisational expenses: Rs 2.5 crore
Purchase of immovable assets: Rs 2.07 crore
Purchase of movable assets: Rs 1.25 crore
Tour and travel: Rs 40 lakh
