NEW DELHI: We have been talking about India'a Richest political parties. Today, we will look at Janata Dal (United), a party  whose success largely depends on its leaders Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav.

Former Railway Minister and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Sharad Yadav are key leaders of this mainly north Indian party. Apart from Bihar, JD (U) has been able to wield some influence in Karnataka thanks to the presence of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

The party has ruled Bihar and Karnataka, and now has eight MPs in the Rajya Sabha and eight in the Lok Sabha. Its income has grown about six times in five years but on a small base.

2002-03: Rs 22 lakh
2003-04: Rs 26.7 lakh
2004-05: Rs 97.2 lakh
2005-06: Rs  64 lakh
2006-07: Rs 1.3 crore

The expenditure in 2006-07 was mostly on election and meeting establishment expenses.

Election costs: Rs 97 lakh
Establishment costs: Rs 11 lakh

The assets of the party rose in the five years period that UTVI has information about but these do not amount to an impressive figure...

2002-03: Rs 31 lakh
2003-04: Rs 32.1 lakh
2004-05: Rs 29 lakh
2005-06: Rs 16.1 lakh
2006-07: Rs 35.8 lakh

These assets barely match the assets of an average middle class working professional. The assets of its leaders are far more.

According to Election Commisiong filings in 2004, Sharad Yadav had assets worth Rs 1.06 crore and Nitish Kumar had assets worth Rs 37.22 lakh.
