NEW DELHI: Home Minister Shivraj Patil said Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) may be permitted to guard private sector establishments by amending the law…..

"I had discussions with the Prime Minister, and the only thing the PM asked me was - do you have enough number of policemen? I said yes, we do have enough number of policemen, and I said we would be increasing the number of CISF personnel also.. The matter is going to the cabinet. There is a law that prohibits CISF security to be given other than public sector  but we are going to amend that law, and say that security can be given to public sector as well as private  sector if they are willing  to be bound by the same laws...

How do you plan to secure big cities, which are also economic hubs?

Shivraj Patil: I am planning to ask state governments to provide helicopters to the police  so that can be used to collect information and control the situation.. I am also asking the state governments to have good control rooms for the entire city - well protected underground control rooms where 100 to 200 people will be there throughout the day and night and keep a watch on what is happening in the city...

Sir, public space is increasing, SEZs are increasing, consumerism is increasing. So, are there are plans to issue guidelines for big malls to ensure better security?

Shivraj Patil: It’s being done.. we are asking authorities to talk to mall owners that they should think of security from the beginning when they are constructing the building. Where shops are being made, they should provide facilities like metal detectors, control rooms... ... but we are not disclosing the details.. if we disclose it, others take it and if we don’t disclose it, people think nothing is being done and they get frightened. so, I'm telling you those things are being done...

Is it mandatory for them to do it or they just suggestions which malls owners may chose to ignore...

Shivraj Patil: I am not so sure whether some things are being done.. it may not be mandatory for them to do but it is in their own interest....
