KOLKATA: The second round of crucial talks to end the Singur impasse ended without any decision. A fresh round of talks will be held on Sunday.
The overwhelming feeling among participants is that the talks are moving towards constructive conclusion. The deal could include monetary compensation as well as some land rehabilitation scheme.
West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi is likely to meet Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattacharjee and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday or Monday.
PTI adds: "Governor expressed desire to hold a meeting with the chief minister and Mamata Banerjee tomorrow or day after," Manik Mukherjee, a member of Trinamool-led delegation that took part in the meeting at the Raj Bhawan, told PTI.
During the talks, the agitators rejected the government's offer of 40 acre from the acquired area and another 100 acre from outside Singur. Trinamool has been pressing for the return of 400 acre to "unwilling" farmers, a demand already rejected by the government.
At the end of the parleys, the Governor said that the two sides went into greater detail on the prospects of a land-based rehabilitation scheme in and around the Tata Motors small car project site at Singur.
In a statement, Gandhi also expressed confidence that the discussions would lead to a satisfactory conclusion tomorrow or on Monday.
An emergency meeting of the ruling Left Front has also been convened tomorrow to discuss the Singur issue. |
