MUMBAI: The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 242 points at 14,643, and moved up to a high of 14,673 in early deals. Profit-taking at higher levels saw the index drop to a low of 14,416 in noon deals - an intra-day swing of over 250 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 49 points (0.34%) at 14,450.
While the BSE Realty index gained 2%, the BSE Bankex was up over 1%. The BSE Metal and Power indices were down 1% each. Market breadth was marginally bullish - out of over 2,720 scrips traded, over 1,345 logged gains and nearly 1,290 declined.
HDFC gained over 3% at Rs 2,363. DLF was up over 2% at Rs 495. M&M and Tata Motors moved up over 2% each to Rs 563 and Rs 434, respectively.
Satyam, Wipro, Infosys, ICICI Bank, SBI and HDFC Bank also finished with gains.
Tata Power was down nearly 3% at Rs 1,021. Jaiprakash declined nearly 3% to Rs 160. Ranbaxy, BHEL, Tata Steel and Reliance also declined.
Total market turnover (BSE+NSE) was Rs 56,500 crore. Vishal IT was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 197 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 147 crore), Reliance (Rs 119 crore), RNRL (Rs 115 crore) and Tata Steel (Rs 90 crore). |
