MUMBAI: The Sensex opened on a flat note at 14,290, and moved up to a high of 14,347 in morning deals. Selling pressure in noon deals saw the index drop to a low of 14,002 - an intra-day swing of 345 points. The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 248 points (1.74%) at 14,048.
All the sectoral indices closed in the red. The BSE Realty and Capital Goods indices dropped over 2% each. Market breadth was bearish - out of over 2,710 scrips traded, over 1,715 declined.
Hindalco plunged 13% to Rs 121. Reliance dropped over 3% to Rs 2,074. Tata Motors, Reliance Infra, BHEL and TCS also declined over 3% each.
Maruti, Satyam, Ranbaxy, Tata Power and ITC closed with marginal gains.
Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 265 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 249 crore), Nu Tek India (Rs 158 crore) and L&T (Rs 137 crore). |
